John Weigel

April 27, 1924 - December 5, 2000
Commander, US Navy, Retired
Peter's Step-Father, John Weigel, recently passed away. It's hard to put into words what this means to his family and friends, so I'll just limit this to what Peter and I have discussed between us.
John was a very kind man, with a great sense of humor. He was organized and efficient, and took excellent care of Bette, Peter's Mom. We attended many fun family get-togethers in their home, with John in charge of the barbeque. I learned to make navy bean soup from him. He enjoyed golf and world travel, and gave generously to countless charities. Bette and John were married for 18 years. John had been hospitalized off and on this year, but spent his last weeks at home with Bette, feeling better than he had in a while. They spent some pleasant time alone together, relaxing at home.
One of my favorite memories of John is from the year he and Bette invited my younger brother into their home for Thanksgiving. John was carving the turkey, and turned his back for a minute, and my brother snuck a piece of turkey from the platter. Without even turning his head, John said "Wait until it's served!" You couldn't put anything over on John.
John's funeral mass and reception was held on December 9th. We didn't want to take too many photographs, so the pictures below can't show the more than 150 friends and family who came to pay their respects to John and his life. We just didn't want this occasion to pass by unmentioned.

Left to Right: Bette's son Patrick, Patrick's wife Kristina, Judy's husband Tom; Steph; Peter; Pat and Kris' daughter Chelsea; Bette's son Christopher; Pat and Kris' daughter Melissa; Christopher's wife Patty; John's daughter Sandy; Dave's son Steven; John Jr.'s wife Zsuzsann; John's daughter Joan; John's daughter Pat; John's son John Jr.; John's son David; Bette's daughter Judy. Not Pictured: over 100 other family members and friends.

Bette's house could barely hold all the well-wishers. Every room was easily this packed with people. Bette's golfing friends, the Crazy Eights, catered and cleaned up afterwards.

Bette's sister-in-law Helen, viewing a collage of pictures put together by John's grandchildren. There were many happy images of John golfing, enjoying exotic locations, and laughing with Bette, family, and friends.

As the sun came out, the guests spilled out of the house, sharing many memories of John.

On December 11, John's interment was held. He was given full military honors.

The pallbearers were John T. Weigel, David Weigel, Patrick Bairey, Peter Bairey, Christopher Bairey, Steven Weigel, and Tom Weimer.

Again, it was standing room only as so many people braved the bitter cold and wind to pay their respects.

John was given a 21-gun salute, and Taps was played.

After the flag was folded, it was presented to John's widow, Bette, by Bill Logan, John's Brother-in-Law.

Afterwards, everyone again made their way to Bette's home for reminiscing and spending time together. This is the end of the formalities that accompanied John's passing, but just the beginning for everyone who will now go on without him.
