The Route

We parked our car at the bottom of Chain of Craters road, and Peter's brother Jim met us there and drove us up to Mau Loa o Mauna Ulu. The first day, we hiked about eight miles and almost 2,700 feet down to Halape, at sea level. After spending the night, we then hiked out to the right, nearly twelve miles to the car.
