The Route

We're setting off on a more ambitious hike today. Our route is the purple line. The green line is the Kilauea Iki hike we did day before yesterday. We're setting off from the Visitor Center, crossing the Kilauea Caldera to Halema'uma'u Crater, through the tourists to the Crater Rim trail, east to the Keanakako'i crater, north on Chain of Craters road for a bit, over the Devastation trail to the back side of Pu'u Pua'i, then across the Byron Ledge trail and back to our starting point. It's eight and a half miles, and we covered it in five and a half hours.
