The Route

We're setting off from the Kilauea Iki Overlook and following the trail counter clockwise along the rim, down into the crater, back across the entire crater floor (leaving the trail for a considerable distance), then back up the crater wall to Thurston Lava Tube parking lot, and finally a little further along the crater rim to our starting point. Our route is the purple line on this map.

Kilauea Iki is a very small crater, compared to the main Kilauea Caldera, which sits to the west on the other side of Byron Ledge. For a full interactive map of this area, click here.
